Streptomycin is an antibiotic drug derived from the actinobacterium Streptomyces griseus. First discovered in 1943, streptomycin played a pivotal role in the treatment of penicillin resistant bacterial infections and is still used as a first line treatment for these infections. Streptomycin’s mechanism of action is inhibition of protein synthesis by binding to the 30s protein of bacterial ribosomes. Dihydrostreptomycin is hydrogenated form of streptomycin and is used against tuberculosis and Gram-negative organisms
